Years 7 and 8

Throughout Key Stage 3, students work from direct observation and personal experience, exploring a variety of themes which concentrate on developing their understanding of the visual elements, e.g. shape and colour, line and tone, pattern and texture and form. Students are encouraged to respond to and evaluate art and craft from different periods, cultures and traditions; making connections between the methods and approaches of other artists and their own work.

They will experience working on both a small and large scale with a range of two- and three-dimensional materials. They will be encouraged to solve problems in a visual and tactile form, modifying their work as it progresses and explaining reasons for change.

Students in Year 7 will study:

Term 1 - The formal elements: Colour; texture; Tone; Line; Shape; Space and Form.

Term 2 – Aboriginal art and culture

Term 3 – African masks, culture and pattern design

Students in Year 8 will study:

Term 1 – Gargoyles and their history. Clay skills

Term 2 – Street art and Banksy. Tagging and graffiti.

Term 3 – Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead festival. Study of Disney’s ‘The Book of Life’ film.
